Mega Man X5

Mega Man X5 Mega Man X5
by Capcom USA

Platform: PlayStation
ESRB Rating: Everyone
ASIN: B000059S78

Check price @ , , Mega Man's exploits have been taking place on a variety of different platforms for more than a decade, but recent attempts to bring old Mega Man into 3-D have largely been missteps. That's why we were chomping at the bit to play Mega Man X5, because it marks a long-overdue return to MM's 2-D roots.

Unfortunately, the game plays more like a rushed overcorrection than a nostalgic, side-scrolling romp. For example, you can now choose between three playable characters: Zero, X, and Fourth. It's a good idea, but the problem is that the characters are so different that this option actually destroys the fluidity of the gaming experience. In the original Mega Man X titles, you couldn't progress until you found a weapon that could be used to destroy a particular boss. In X5, bosses can be put out of their misery with the Z-Saber and the X-Buster.

But the game's biggest problem is its difficulty. The first law of game design is that a game should provide gradual, continual challenge. X5 just keeps getting easier and easier due to the endless number of checkpoints and unlimited continues. The result is Mega Man with training wheels.

By Mega Man standards, this game is truly a disappointment. On the bright side, if you are new to the gaming scene and are looking for a simple game that will help you improve your skills, this game might be your cup of tea. For most gamers, though, X5 is way too easy! --Todd Mowatt

Reviewer: andrusi from Raleigh, NC's review seems to have been by someone who barely ever played any Mega Man game, much less the one being reviewed. "Fourth" is not the name of a character in the game; rather, it is the name of a set of armor that X can wear to improve his abilities. All Mega Man games have infinite continues except for the very first one, the Legends series, and the GBA titles. And it was always possible to destroy most bosses with your default weapon, it was just tougher that way (and it's still like that). I also have yet to determine how X5, which came out right between X4 and X6, qualifies as "a long-overdue return" to anything other than the frustrating level design that plagued some early Mega Man games. In short, this is indeed a very poor excuse for a Mega Man game, but not for the reasons cited in the product description. It's better than the old DOS PC games, though.

This Game is perfect. Yes u might find some problems, like in passing the bosses or a specific part in the game. I been there. It's every-thing you've wanted in an adventure game. One thing I don't like in this game is that X is too slow. And with OUT certain powers u might find yourself STOCK!!! The game speed is alright and so is the graphics. ...

ok......but too easy, July 24, 2002

i thought this game was far too easy for me. I think capcom should have made the game much more harder. I am a megaman fan and the old nintendo megaman games are harder then this. The graphics and sound were good but the storyline was ....Hope x6 is better then this.

A must get game for Megaman fans!, April 8, 2002

This game is good but it could have been better and have been made longer and a bit harder. Overall the game is great if your a megaman fan but my advice is to get the megaman battle network ,the best game on GBA! The good thing about this game is that you get loads of new armors and colorful grapics and enjoyable levels, a bit hard at first but once your used to megaman style controls its easy.

The best., March 31, 2002

Yeah, it's my first PSone game and the best. Cool music, great soundtrack, challenging levels, superb graphics and amazing gameplay. You also get to duck!!! For the first time in MegaMan games, you get to duck!!!!! The bad? Well, Sigma's still annoying.

AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, March 22, 2002

I've been a huge fan of megaman games since i was 8 years old and till this day i always go to the local toy store(Or order it on when ever a new megaman came out. After playng X4 witch was fantastic I could not wait to play X5 but when i finaly played it and after 5 minutes of game playing i was asking myself (...)Where's The the Cut scenes? Insted of (...) cut scenes like that were in X4 there was insted crapy stills with sub titles! This was a let down i did'nt feel like playing the game anymore but i did and as i played i relized (...)! This game is hard! Don't listen to the amazon review this is not an easy game, The game makers put a slow motion option in the game anyone who says it's easy most likly played it in slow motion, There are parts in the game that are so Hard you begin to ask yourself "Why did i buy This Crap?". Graphics and sound are great as in any megaman game Gameplay is also very good but with no cut Scenes a lame plot and a crap ending it just does not live up to X4 in fact it's the worst in the series. If your a die hard megaman fan it's worth a buy otherwise Rent it the game has little replay value.

What is this series coming to?, December 13, 2001

This game flat out stinks. The timer is a stupid idea. The game is way too easy. X4 seems to get praised quite a bit even though it wasn't that great. X1 and X3 are the best in this series. Forget about X5.

Not a worthy successor to X4, December 11, 2001

After playing Mega Man X4 I was really expecting its sequel to blow me away. Instead, it just plain blows. However, it's still a decent game, and you may want to try it out. See the pros and cons below:

-You can play as X or Zero, and switch between them between stages
-If you choose X as your dominant character, you automatically get his suit of armor from the last game (choose Zero as the dominant one and you get his arm cannon)
-X can collect pieces for two awesome suits of armor
-Each character can obtain an ultimate armor
-The Rock Monster and Wall Face are back
-New power-ups and challenges available

-Several continue points in stages make the game too easy
-Bosses have the most stupid names of any Mega Man game
-Special weapons must be used with the Triangle button
-Final boss too easy
-Time limit rushes the player
-Enough plotholes to fill a warehouse
-Quick Man's instant kill force beams are back
-No anime cut scenes (instead, the game has still-graphic text sequences (a la Ninja Gaiden))

A decent game, but it isn't worthy of being a follow-up to the excellent X4. Due to some ending differences, you may want to play through more than once. It's not exactly purchasing quality though, so I just suggest renting it.
