Amazon.com Product Description: Featuring 16 of the best leagues and more than 75 national teams, 2002 FIFA World Cup brings the game of the world to your fingertips. You will execute curling corner kicks, awesome slide tackles, shots from the top of the box, crunching challenges, and palm-wringing penalty kicks.

Among the major enhancements to this version is the passing system--the core of any real soccer (football) game. It now emulates the same decisions made in a real match. Gamers can place the ball anywhere on the field of play, resulting in an immensely increased repertoire of developing plays. Teammates now make long up-field runs, diagonal runs through the midfield, and streaks across the back of an opponent's defense. They'll call for the ball as they break, letting you know to pass to the space ahead of them.

EA Sports also totally rewrote the AI. The AI now searches for space and key weaknesses in your team's positioning, and will make off-the-ball runs or build up intelligent passing plays before striking a precise through ball behind your last line. Depending on the difficulty level, the AI will create a much more interesting and challenging opponent than in previous versions.

Amazon.co.uk: Marrying EA Sports' trademark razzamatazz with the hype and glitter of the biggest sporting event on Earth, the PS One's 2002 FIFA World Cup is a multimedia feast, with a passable game tacked on too. As with FIFA 2002, it's clear that the bulk of the development money has gone in the direction of the PC and next-generation consoles; that's not to say that the PS One version has been totally neglected, as the intro sequences and the singing and dancing menu system testify. It's just that when you cut to the match action, things don't flow together as well, with jerky scrolling and underwhelming visuals.

This does leave the player more able to concentrate on the game itself though, and the match engine is packed with neat little moves and touches that, with practice, will help send your selected team to World Cup glory. Replete with the full player rosters, official kits, and the full tournament to play your way through, the game centers around the tournament at the expense of other league-based options--but then, you can't argue that it doesn't give you what it says on the box.

2002 FIFA World Cup, despite its flaws, could be just the title for the younger player who's not particularly experienced with games in this genre: it's simple to get into and still provides a decent challenge. --Simon Brew

Only so much to improve but..., July 5, 2002

EA is the leader in sports related games. With Madden and their soccor games they have truly led the way in the team sports market of video games. Their soccer games have been great, but have remained basically the same for the last 3 years. This version actually attempts, but fails in adding that extra something. The shooting is absurd, the longer you hold the button the stronger the kick. This makes no sense...you can physically kick harder with a swift boot, not rev-up and slow down. As usual the goal-keeping in EA soccer games is terrible. You have little to no control a goalie...it is a real bummer.

Nothing new here, just the same material released the previous 3-5 years.

This is the best soccer game available for the Ps one! Great graphics and fun gameplay make this a must-buy! However, if you own a better system, such as a PS2, XBOX, or GAMECUBE, i reccommend getting it there instead. i also wish that tis series would have evolved more. it is hard to notice differences between this, FIFA SOCCER 2002, and FIFA SOCCER 2001. good game.
