Amazon.com: The Madden series is by far the most popular NFL console-game franchise in North America. It is the game of choice among many active and former NFL players, and has been a mainstay on most gaming platforms for close to a decade. And this year's version for the PlayStation, Madden NFL 2001, is amazing--it's even better than the incredible Nintendo 64 version of the same name.

In terms of playability, EA Sports has added some nice new features. Players are rewarded with collectable in-game Madden Cards by performing certain tasks, which can be used to unlock secret game codes, players, stadiums, and legendary NFL teams. Also, you can trade those cards with friends using the PlayStation memory card. Enhancing the replayability of Madden NFL 2001 is a new two-minute drill feature that allows up to 10 players to compete for the highest score.

The game does have a couple of trouble areas. The CPU play isn't all that synched with the gameplay, resulting in some very strange calls and plays. John Madden's commentary is stocked with only a few phrases, which are used ad nauseam. While not perfect, the sound effects and crowd noises are still preferable to the whiny blips of the N64 version. --Todd Mowatt

Pros:
Collectable Madden Cards can be used to unlock secret game codes, players, stadiums, and teams
New two-minute drill feature

Cons:
CPU sometimes makes very strange calls and plays
Repetitive Madden phrases

Product Description: John Madden is back and, again, he's brought the entire NFL with him into your PlayStation with Madden NFL 2001. The game includes the updated rosters you'd expect, but new this season is the addition of coaches on the sidelines to give you specialized advice. They also often "encourage" the players and shout "helpful advice" out to the referees. Finer details for this version include wristbands, visors, facemasks, and turf tape--specific to what each player favors in the real NFL. Collisions now factor the weight and height of players, making for more realistic hits. EA has even gone to the trouble of replicating some of the touchdown celebration dances and taunts of real players.

The game also features a new music soundtrack, new audio, and new play-by-play recorded by Madden and broadcast partner Pat Summerall. Players can collect Madden cards in this installment of the series by completing certain tasks, and they can trade those cards with friends via the separately sold memory card. Exclusive to the PlayStation version of the game, the "create-a-team" feature allows players to create new teams, edit existing rosters, and even recruit retired veterans to the squad.

Mad About Madden!, November 4, 2002

Madden NFL 2001 is an excellent football game. If you like football, and you like playing it as a video game, you'll love the best game in the league. The gameplay is better than its competitor, 989 Sports, and I feel I can get into the game more. No cheerleader pictures, like on NFL GameDay, so you can stick to football. The different modes (Practice, 2-Minute Drill, etc) and Madden Cards (reward system for completing various tasks) help make this game a powerhouse. You won't be disappointed with Madden.

This game is the bomb! It has great plays, great graphics, and my favorite team (miami dolphins) is one of the best. The bad thing about this game is every once and a while it freezes. Than after a minute it comes back. But overall, this is a cool game.

one of the best games ive played, August 20, 2002

the game is great.the graphics arent that good but the good gameplay makes up for it.my favorite features are create a play, create a team and,Franchise mode.a hint in frachise mode is in the pre season chose the super bowl champs, runner up in the supper bowl, and chose the 3 divsion champs from the afc,or nfc so your rookie players gain experince even if the lose.any way this is a great game

MAJOR GLITCH RUINS BEST FOOTBALL GAME EVER PLAYED, July 12, 2002

FIRST OFF , I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT 90% OF THIS GAME IS EXCELLENT... NOW FOR THE OTHER 10%; THIS GAME HAS A VERY!!!! ANNOYING HABIT OF FREEZING UP WHILE PLAYING. I DONT MEAN "HERE AND THERE"; IT'S RATHER CONSISTANT..... LIKE EVERY 4TH QTR YOU'RE IN THE LEAD AND WHEN YOUR CPU OPPONENT SNAPS THE BALL THE QB HANGS ON TO THE BALL (WITHOUT SNAPPING) AND YOUR PLAYERS GO AFTER THE STATIONARY QB TO NO AVAIL... AT THIS POINT YOU CAN DO NOTHING TO "JAR" THE CPU TO CONTINUE... GAME OVER. YOU MUST QUIT IF YOU WANT TO PLAY ANYMORE(WHICH YOU WONT AFTER THIS HAPPENS 6 OR 7 TIMES ESPECIALLY IF YOURE PLAYING SEASON ). THE REAL EXCELLENCE OF THIS GAME WEARS OFF (UNFORTUNATELY) BECAUSE OF THESE "FREEZES" IN SHORT ,I WOULD REALLY LOVE THIS GAME IF IT DIDNT SCREW UP ALL THE TIME .... REALLY!!!!!! TOTAL BUMMER.

I lost 10 straight exhibition games against the computer, but once I got the hang of the game controls I can't be stopped now. This game is pretty enjoyable, I'd recommend it for any football fan.
